SC takes suo motu cognisance of illegal sand mining in Chambal sanctuary

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Sanctuary. This rampant mining threatens endangered aquatic wildlife, including the gharial. The court noted that even areas where the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister released gharials are affected. The matter has been placed before the Chief Justice of India for necessary directions.
