Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford said Thursday he appreciated coach Sean McVay calling him ahead of the team selecting Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick last month, while reaffirming his commitment to keeping the Rams competitive in the present. “I understand where the team’s coming from,” said Stafford. “Listen, I’m not 25 years old, and I get that. So we’re doing everything we can to be as good a football team as we can for now, for the future, for all of it.” Stafford, 38, declined to detail the specifics of his conversation with McVay but described their relationship as one of “constant dialogue.” He signed a one-year, $55 million extension last week keeping him with Los Angeles through the 2027 season. On working alongside Simpson, Stafford struck a measured but welcoming tone. “He’s a smart kid. He’s got talent. Obviously he’s a high draft pick,” said Stafford. “My job first and foremost is to get myself and our team ready to play as best I possibly can. Happy to add good players to our team. He’s one of them.” Stafford added that Simpson has shown a strong appetite for learning. “He’s a guy that asks questions,” said Stafford. “I’ve been trying to answer those as honestly and as thoroughly as I possibly can.” When asked whether McVay has assured him of his standing with the club, Stafford was direct. “As long as I do my job at a high level. That’s everybody here,” said Stafford. “You got to go out there and play well and be the best option at your spot. So yeah, that’s my goal.”
