Nationalist Party Secretary General Charles Bonello conceded electoral defeat on Sunday morning, just after 11:20am. Addressing media at the Naxxar counting hall, Bonello stated that, according to initial indications, the Labour Party has won the 2026 general election by some 18,000 votes. The official result will be confirmed later on in the day. Bonello remarked that this is the PN’s best general election result since it last won in 2008, and the lowest voter gap it has suffered in a general election defeat since first losing its place in government in 2013. The PN Secretary General told journalists on Sunday morning that with early results indicating a gap of around 18,000 votes between the two major parties, the Nationalist Party has reduced the gap to the Labour Party by over half. In 2022, the Labour Party won its third consecutive general election by over 39,000 votes. The Labour Party is now celebrating an historic fourth consecutive general election victory – this is the first time that this feat has been accomplished by any political party in Malta since independence.
