Editor’s note: We will continue to pursue the truth

BirGün Our reporter Ebru Çelik’s article has remained in the headlines for the past two days. BirGün’s report has undoubtedly served as a valuable example of just how effective a powerful piece of journalism can be. Journalism – which those in power have sought to erase, destroy and make people forget – has once again proven its worth. It has been confirmed that there is no barrier that good journalism, combined with the power of truth, cannot overcome. From the moment it was published, our report was assessed not so much on the basis of journalistic standards as on its political implications. Our reporter, Ebru Çelik, and our newspaper were framed within this context and made targets. Threats, insults and slander were flying thick and fast. It is worth emphasising once again: BirGün stands behind every single line of this report. We acknowledge there may be shortcomings, but there is nothing superfluous. The attempt to deny the report, initiated by the CHP Headquarters, soon gave way to outright attacks. The provincial administration under the trustee regime, which did not want the report to be discussed, and those supporting it, targeted our newspaper. Not content with that, they brought AKP-affiliated trolls into play. First and foremost, let us make it clear that we will settle this entirely before the courts. We will pursue every insult and every slander. Do not expect us to remain silent in the face of attempts to discredit BirGün—which we have created with great care and effort—by circles whose true allegiances have long been exposed.
