A former Vancouver Canucks reporter has landed a new NHL gig with a Western Conference rival. Kate Pettersen parted ways with the Canucks following the 2023-24 season and has gone on to appear in a variety of different roles. The veteran reporter continued her work as a hockey reporter with the NHL Network during the 2024-25 season, and has also done work for The Fourth Period, as well as co-hosting the Frankly Speaking show, alongside NHL insider Frank Seravalli. The Toronto native has even dipped her toe into golf coverage, working for ESPN for a time. However, none of these roles were tied to an NHL team, that is, until now. The Colorado Avalanche announced on Saturday that Pettersen will be joining the club while the team’s regular host, Rachel Tos, goes on maternity leave. “I can’t think of a better place to spend the rest of the season,” Pettersen told a crowd of Avalanche fans. “I’m so excited, I’ve heard so many great things about Avs faithful and what a time to walk into this building the way this team has been playing.” > Everyone say hello to Kate Pettersen, she’ll be filling in for Rachel in the near future as she goes on maternity leave! pic.twitter.com/HHAgpyF5CS > > — x – Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) March 28, 2026 While the Avalanche are doing much better than the Canucks this season, sitting atop the NHL standings, this isn’t an unfamiliar spot for Pettersen to be in. Her last season in Vancouver saw the Canucks finish sixth in the entire NHL, atop the Pacific Division, and go to Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs. After leaving Vancouver, the Canucks hired Olivia MacDonald as a rinkside reporter, who is still with the club this season. Apart from working with the Canucks and Avalanche, Pettersen has also been involved with the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators.
