Utkal Divas is being celebrated across the State on Wednesday with great pride and enthusiasm. The day marks the formation of a separate Odisha province on April 1, 1936, due to the relentless efforts of many visionary leaders. The historic occasion holds immense significance as Odisha became the first state in India to be formed on a linguistic basis, setting a precedent for the reorganisation of states in the country. For the people of Odisha, the day is a celebration of identity, unity and cultural heritage. Odisha had come under British rule in 1803, and for decades, Odia-speaking regions remained scattered under different administrations. This fragmentation posed a serious challenge to the preservation of the Odia language and culture, prompting a strong movement for unification. The demand for a separate province gained momentum in the late 19th century, led by prominent leaders and social reformers who tirelessly worked to protect the linguistic and cultural identity of the region. Their sustained efforts gave rise to a socio-cultural awakening that eventually culminated in the formation of Odisha as a separate province. On April 1, 1936, the British government approved the creation of Odisha, bringing together Odia-speaking regions under one administrative unit. The day has since been observed as Utkal Divas, symbolising the triumph of unity and determination. Across the State, the 90th Utkal Divas is being marked with cultural programmes, patriotic events and official ceremonies. Schools, colleges and government institutions are organising special events to honour the legacy of the leaders who made this historic achievement possible. I wish everyone a happy Utkal Divas through my sand art and seek blessings from Lord Jagannath for the progress of our state,” said eminent sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik. As Odisha celebrates this milestone, the day serves as both a tribute to its glorious past and a reminder of the collective vision that continues to shape its future.
