FIFA World Cup Shocker: Ecuador Stun Four-Time Champions Germany 2-1

Ecuador pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating four-time champions Germany 2-1 in their final Group E match at the New York/New Jersey Stadium to book a place in the Round of 32. Germany, who had already secured qualification for the knockout stage, made a dream start by taking the lead within two minutes. Leroy Sane found the net after converting a precise pass from Florian Wirtz, calmly placing his finish into the bottom-left corner past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez. The goal, scored in the 1st minute and 49th second, became the second-fastest goal in Germany’s FIFA World Cup history. However, Ecuador immediately protested the goal, claiming Germany midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic had caught Pedro Vite with a high boot during the build-up. Despite the appeals, the goal stood. The early setback did little to unsettle Ecuador, who responded with confidence and intensity. In the ninth minute, Nilson Angulo capitalised on a loose ball in midfield before unleashing a stunning long-range strike that beat Manuel Neuer to level the scores. The South American side continued to trouble Germany with aggressive pressing and quick counter-attacks, taking a 1-1 scoreline into half-time. Ecuador found the winner in the 77th minute from a corner kick. Kevin Rodriguez won an aerial duel and flicked the ball across goal, where Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest to poke home from close range, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Ecuador players and supporters. Germany pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, piling pressure on Ecuador’s defence throughout seven minutes of stoppage time. However, Ecuador held firm to seal a memorable victory and advance to the knockout stage. The result marks only the second time Ecuador have progressed beyond the group stage of a FIFA World Cup , matching their historic run at the 2006 tournament, while Germany suffered a shock defeat despite having already qualified.
