Guwahati Traffic Violations Surge: 12,000+ Helmetless Riders, 396 Drunk Drivers Fined in May

The Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) in Guwahati detected 11,859 cases of helmetless riding during May, while traffic police personnel identified another 362 violations through manual enforcement, taking the total number of helmet-related violations to 12,221 in a single month. The figures were shared by Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah during a press conference on Friday, where he highlighted the growing concern over traffic rule violations in the city. Borah said the traffic police have adopted a series of measures to reduce road accidents and improve compliance with traffic regulations. Stressing that the objective is not merely to collect fines, he said the department is focused on saving lives through stricter enforcement. “We are being strict to prevent accidents and save lives. Everyone must follow traffic rules,” Bora said. He urged two-wheeler riders to wear helmets at all times and reminded citizens that both riders and pillion passengers are required to wear protective headgear. He also appealed to motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol, avoid wrong-side driving, and refrain from illegal roadside parking. The data presented by the traffic police showed a sharp rise in several categories of violations during May: • Drunk driving cases : 396 cases in May, up from 41 in April. • Wrong-side driving cases : 963 cases in May, compared to 526 in April. • Triple-riding cases : 130 cases in May (96 detected through ITMS and 34 manually), up from 113 in April. • Mobile phone use while driving : 31 cases in May, compared to 22 in April. • Tinted glass removals : 223 vehicles in May, against 9 in April. • Driving licences seized : 223 licences seized in May, compared to 20 in April. • Modified silencers removed : 7 cases in May, against 3 in April. • Rash driving cases : 95 in May, up from 9 in April. • Seatbelt violations : 90 cases in May, compared to 52 in April. The traffic police also reported a significant increase in enforcement action, with e-challan fines amounting to Rs 3.01 crore imposed in May, compared to Rs 2.30 crore in April. A total of 1,107 non-FIR/manual cases were sent to court in May, up from 123 cases in April. Bora said the city police will continue using both technology-driven monitoring systems and on-ground enforcement to identify violators and improve road safety across Guwahati .
