The push to improve domestic air connectivity in Nigeria is gaining fresh momentum as airline operators continue to expand their networks across key economic corridors. In a recent development, ValueJet has announced the introduction of a new scheduled service linking Lagos with Benin City in Edo State, a route expected to ease travel demands along one of the country’s busiest road and business corridors. According to the airline, the new Lagos–Benin City operation is scheduled to commence on May 18 and forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen its presence across Nigeria while improving access to the South-South region. The Managing Director of ValueJet, Omololu Majekodunmi, explained that the expansion is designed to offer passengers a more efficient alternative to long and often congested road journeys. “The addition of Benin to our network reflects our focus on connecting key cities across Nigeria with safe, reliable, and customer-friendly services. We are pleased to provide more accessible and efficient travel options for our passengers while continuing to expand our reach,” he said. For many travellers, the Lagos–Benin corridor is a heavily trafficked route frequently associated with extended travel times by road. The introduction of flight services is expected to significantly reduce journey duration while improving comfort and predictability for both business and leisure passengers. The airline confirmed that tickets for the new route will be accessible through its official website and mobile application, reflecting its continued investment in digital booking channels and customer convenience. Beyond the new route, ValueJet has steadily expanded its domestic and regional operations. The carrier currently serves major Nigerian destinations such as Abuja, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Calabar, Kano, Gateway International Airport, and Jos. It also operates select regional flights to West and Central African cities including Cotonou, Accra, Malabo, and Banjul. Industry observers note that the latest Lagos–Benin City addition signals continued competition among domestic carriers seeking to capture growing passenger demand while improving intercity mobility within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
